PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEWS: VANTAGE WINDOW NORTH SHORE

When designing a new home, what key aspect of the home do you think people should be careful not to overlook? The kitchen? The bathroom? Perhaps a fireplace? Paul and Josh from Vantage Window North Shore remind us of the first thing people encounter when entering a home.

P: When entering a home, the first thing you see, of course, is the entrance and the front door. This is what gives the first impression and should be carefully considered. Besides choosing the style, there are many colour options that shouldn’t be overlooked.

J: I totally agree. Why not dress the door differently to the house to make it a focal point? Of course your choice will come down to the overall style and design you are looking for, but discussing the opportunity for some creative flair is a conversation not to be missed.

M: What other joinery elements are important when designing a house?

P: Windows are the key element that helps to connect the inside to the outside. Think about the views and how you want them to be ‘framed’ in your home. Where is the best place to capture your views and how do you want to showcase them? It is also worth thinking about any scenery or outlooks you would rather hide away – for example, a retaining wall. Strategically adjusting the size and position of a window can not only help to enhance pleasurable views but can also cleverly sway the focus away from any that are less desirable.

J: It’s important to go through your window layout with the architect or your design and build consultant, to make sure the opportunities with windows in your home are fully utilised. A wisely designed window layout can truly elevate the home and make a strong statement as well as increasing the enjoyment you experience from living in the home. We are always happy to meet up with home owners to discuss ideas and options, to make sure the windows deliver their purpose. Each home owner may have different expectation of space, airflow, natural light, privacy or other specific requirements that need to be considered at the design stage.

M: That’s certainly the advantage of design and build – every detail can be considered.

P: Indeed. From my point of view, there are a few fundamental things that should be applied to all builds, such as always having the windows centred, having architraves, and always allowing sufficient wall space for curtains, drapes or blinds. Once you have the essentials right you can have fun with the rest.

J: Yes, don’t forget the curtain space. It is so important that the curtains can be completely opened and stacked up neatly at the sides.
