In late 2018 we selected Maddren Homes to Design and Build our home on newly subdivided section in Greenhithe, Auckland.

I wanted a fixed price provider who once briefed could manage the job from beginning to end with limited input from me. We took our time with the design of the house, utilising the expertise of their knowledgeable staff and suppliers to finally settle on the build design, fixtures and fittings, Kitchen, bathrooms, paint and floor coverings. This meant that most of the decisions were made prior to breaking ground and my input was needed mainly to make decisions around unforeseen issues. Issues around PC sums for earth works and retaining walls when council changed their interpretation of what was planned. 

Thankfully the interaction with council was managed seamlessly by Maddren Staff who obviously have a great relationship with their council contacts.

The job was managed in full by Chris Good the onsite project manager, he worked hard to keep me informed of progress, and help solve the inevitable issues that happen through any build program.

Tucked away off the dusty, busy road of Jl. Raya Silakarang, the entrance a graveyard of statues and stone water features, and the rhythmic tapping of tools audible from under the modest tin-roofed structure. Chris and Pat were on a mission to find Bali’s best kept secret - local craftsmen Wayan Eka, whose exquisite, hand crafted stone carvings adorn five star hotel lobby’s and luxury resorts. It was during this latest trip that the rumblings of inspiration started bubbling to the surface for building Chris and Pat’s dream home.

Fast forward two years and the rhythmic tapping of tools commenced construction of the stone wall entrance that would welcome guests along floating steps above a serene fish pond, reminiscent of a Balinese spa.

A luxurious tropical resort was the thread woven throughout Chris and Pat’s fifth and final build. From the 400kg sandstone carving on the entry wall, the romantic freestanding ensuite bath, to the private decks off the guest bedrooms, you’d easily think you were in a five star resort. “We love simplicity and wanted it to be easy to look after while giving us the privacy and peace we need”, says Chris, who’s green fingers designed the lush outdoor environment complete with bubbling stream. And it was cocktails on the loungers by the Sofitel Hotel pool that seeded the idea for giant palms growing through the deck to cast natural shade during summer. 

As an artist and bespoke audio craftsman, Chris had a vision for the balance of easy living and uncomplicated luxury. And it’s clear to see that not a single detail has been overlooked. The beautiful vaulted cathedral ceiling with soft gradient LED lights create a peaceful glow for unwinding at the end of the day. Or a roam around the house is made easier with lights automatically turning on as you enter a room.

It’s these personal touches that are expressions of both Chris and Pat’s lifestyle, resulting in a liveable, low maintenance home that is as bespoke as it’s owners.

Being a builder, I have built our own homes, but this time because I had retired and have been out of the system for quite some years we decided to get someone else to build for us.  We already had the site so it was a question of quality of build and after looking at several companies we decided on Maddren Homes.

They were happy to work with our plan and style (making suggestions along the way) until we arrived at the home we have today. They also knew I would be watching with a trained eye.  Once I met Jake I felt confident that we would get a good job. We discussed details on what we liked along the way without any problems. Jake was always prompt in getting back and informing us of timetables. The build finished ahead of time and the standard of finish from their subcontractors was excellent.

We would be happy to recommend Maddren Homes for their professionalism and standard of finish. We would be happy to build with them again.

‘Can Ollie come and play?’ Moments later, seven year old Ollie tears out of the house to shrieks of laughter and joins the boys from next door as they race off on their scooters. It was this, a family-centric development set amongst the rolling farmlands on the outskirts of West Auckland that Sarah and John Bell wanted.

They’d built before and enjoyed the process, but while they’d loved their big new house, now with a young family it was time to downsize and take a chunk off the mortgage. But that in no way meant compromising on design, function or quality. With a smaller floor plan, they got more creative and worked closely with Maddren to personalise their house plan and create a home they loved and that suited their growing family. A second living area that doubles as a fourth bedroom for sleep-overs, and a carpeted garage to serve as a messy-play area and venue for kids parties.

The local school with a roll of only 250 also added to the appeal for freelance Graphic Designer Sarah and Lighting Technician John and their children Ollie, and Nina, three. Relocating to the country suited their flexible work schedules and gave them the opportunity to not only reduce their mortgage, but provide a simpler way of life for their children to grow up in.

Taking that initial step to building their first house came about after renovating older houses and the constant need for installing ventilation and heating systems to keep their young family healthy. After that first build went so smoothly, they wished they’d done it sooner. With double glazed windows that retained the heat, paired with ducted ventilation to regulate the temperature, the house was warm and dry and the kids were healthier.

Energetic young children need plenty of space to play so expansive decking that flowed from the living area was a must-have for the kids but also for entertaining. The social aspect of the country community became the unexpected icing on the cake for Sarah and John. It wasn’t just having a new house in the country. They’d actually built into a growing development with other young families just like them, which made their house become a home.

Their neighbours with children became their friends, each looking out for the others children. And socialising together at neighbourhood street parties and BBQ’s soon became the norm. It’s the classic tale of country meets city; living a less chaotic lifestyle removed from the hustle and bustle, but with all the modern trappings and conveniences that a new home offers.

Hi Maddren team,

 Just want to say a big thank you for helping create our new home.  Was a very special day for us to see our dream become a reality and finally complete after 3 years of planning and waiting.

 Although the build was not without its share of hiccups (last mention of the brick wall!) it was very rarely due to the Maddren team.  We definitely picked the right company for the build and have found everyone at Maddren fantastic to deal with and any concerns we had were always addressed.

 Special acknowledgement needs to go to Chris.  Talk about baptism by fire!  Extremely difficult job trying to keep the client happy whilst trying to manage the tradies, contractors and an architect.  But he always had a can do attitude where nothing ever seemed to be a problem which couldn't be resolved or too much trouble to look into.  

 Also thanks to Alex who is a great ambassador for Maddren and very patient and understanding with all our numerous requests and variations.

 We look forward to moving into our new home in the next few days, opening the lovely treats you left for us and settling down in time for Christmas.  As promised there will definitely be another celebratory round of drinks and food at Valley Rd and we will be in touch to organise something in the new year so you can all come out and see both houses as homes.

After months researching, visiting new-built show homes for ideas of design etc., to finding a section in the area we wished to live, Maddren Homes - a locally owned business - had sections available which suited us.  Decision made.

We have been in our Maddren-built home for just on six months.  Our journey on our first venture into a new build was an exciting and amazing learning curve.

Maddren Home’s staff from Sales, Design and Planning, the Project Manager, and Office staff guided us through this challenging project, assisting us with design and special requirements we needed to build. Upon signing the agreement to house design and build schedule, staff worked us through Council Consent requirements and kept us updated on progress.

Once construction began communication was excellent throughout.  All workmanship by Maddren Home builders and their tradespeople was completed to a very high standard of detail, finish, and on time.  Assistance was available in choosing interior and exterior paint colour, flooring, bathroom and kitchen design (very important areas and we made many changes during planning), and managed to get it nearly right for us.  Plus much more guidance available from very friendly staff.
